A new legal framework which has been signed into law will ensure that gas flaring levels are at a minimum; by ensuring that the Federal Government will take over gas flare fields. The new regulation, The Flare Gas Reduction Regulation 2018 will see that flared gas is channeled into sustainable use.

The new framework consists of sections aimed at reducing the causative environmental and social effects of gas flaring, preventing waste of natural resources and most importantly, the benefits and opportunities reaped from harnessing flare gas.

The framework provides the government with the right to exploit associated natural gas from a flare gas without payment of royalties. The legal framework also stipulates higher fines for gas flaring up to and including reporting false data on gas flared by an operator. It also enables producers, with the required permits,  to collect flare gas on behalf of the government for commercial purposes.

By implementing this new legal regulation to the letter, it is hoped that attractive investments can be made in the Nigerian Gas sector. Privately owned Gas companies such as Luxxorgas, are making groundbreaking efforts in the distribution and commercialization of Natural Gas in West Africa
