A new gas flaring law, which aims at handing out penalties for operators that flare gas in the country has been recently approved by President Muhammadu Buhari. The new regulation was recently published in the new Flare Gas Prevention of Waste and Pollution Regulations 2018.

The new law is set to back the government’s efforts in reducing green house gas emissions caused by gas flaring. The law also gives the foundation for the implementation of the the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP).

The NGFCP, is set to introduce new payment structures and fines for gas flaring, in an “polluter pays” principle where the offender is fined based on the amount of gas flared as well as procedures for reporting accurate data. These activities would help to promote the objectives which are to protect the environment of the Niger Delta region, prevent resource wastage and drive economic and social benefits from harnessing flare gas

By embracing the regulation, and utilizing flared gas effectively, it can create jobs, drive the gas sector and generate electricity that can be used to drive the economy. Privately owned Gas companies such as Luxxorgas, are making groundbreaking efforts in the distribution and commercialization of Natural Gas in West Africa
