Nigeria, Morocco collaborate on regional pipeline For Gas transport
June 29, 2018.
The Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Kingdom of Morocco have signed various agreements to develop pipelines that transport natural gas from Nigeria’s coastline to Europe via North Africa. The gas pipeline, thought to measure approximately 6000km is an extension of the already existing West Africa gas pipeline that transports gas to Benin, Togo and Ghana.
The agreements, both signed by the leaders of the respective countries ensure that Nigeria brings to reality the diversification from main energy sources, and utilisation of gas as well as provision of jobs and utilization of gas as a feedstock in the agricultural sector.
The construction of the Nigeria-Morocco pipeline is said to be phased, and will occur over a period of 25 years. Similar agreements for gas pipelines had been scheduled in the past with countries such as Algeria, but were later halted due to the overwhelming financial implication.
Nigeria still remains the nation with the largest gas reserves in Africa as well as the 7th largest in the world.
